What in god's name is crime ware you may ask . Crime ware is a term that Ephraim Schwartz put out in one of his recent articles in Computerworld magazine. I know I wont do justice by bringing it to you like this but just to have a taste of what it is all about read on.
Crime ware is in essence not so much a software but a process of how at present the motivation of bad guys are not so much as to gain fame through notoriety of being able to hack or crack a bank's computer infrastructure for example, but receiving monetary gains from being able to do so in quiet.
Sick as that may sound heres the break down of what a cracker might gain monetarily according to Chad Harrington, Vice President of marketing at FireEye said. Call it market rate if you will.
An exploit in an operating system depending on how big it is, can be sold for as little as US$200 and as much as US$50 000...in the open market.
Bot Herders, meaning the people that compromise systems and reap whatever is on the system, charge US$1 per compromised machine per month. If it is a corporate system the bot herder stands to gain up to US$100 per system per month.
The trail of crime is as follows.
The Bot herder will compromise the systems, the Bot herder will then sell the information to the Fraudster who will then use it to whatever means he or she feels comfortable with.
This usually involves, stealing of identities, customer and employee data, intellectual property, credit card information...well the list goes on.
So folks are there ways to circumvent these people, certainly there are, the more aware of your network and the computer that you use the better protected you are against these attacks.
Information is the key. Hopefully you can now understand the motives behind the bad guy's actions. This is definitely a new age of crime, it's time for some of us to have a reality check. The bad guys ARE out there and they are here to STAY.
