In Software tips was the following: 3. Reduce processes/programs running in your system tray. Thats located at the bottom right hand corner of your desktop where you can see tiny icons beside the system time. These programs run when you boot up your computer and some of them stay running as long as you are logged on. So it takes a while to load them before you can do anything else on your computer. You can get to switch them off by going to Start -> Run ->type in msconfig and press enter.... I used to do that in previous Windows versions, but with XP I am running into the problem that upon unticking any process under "Startup", on the tab "General" it switches from "Normal Startup" to "Safe Mode", and checking "Normal" puts the ticks back on the "Startup" tab to all programs that I unticked.

Hi Andrea I hope I understood you correctly here. You do not want to click anything in the General Tab unless you are doing some serious troubleshooting and debugging. Click on the 'Start Up' Tab after launching msconfig from the run command. It should look something like this, although mine has limited processes running on it but you get the picture. Under 'Startup Item' be sure to do some research on what that program leads you too. It could be a system process that is necessary in launching some application. Like for a general rule I do not untick my anti virus 'avgcc' , my firewall 'zlclient'. Just Google out the things that you are not sure and you'll find out what they are supposedly launching and you figure out what you need to run at start up based on your research. If you run into a hiccup post here and we'll guide you through it. Even better if you can take a screenshot of your msconfig and email it to me an let me see what you can untick. Be warned though some processes do return like MSNMsgr after launching it, it will activate itself in the Startup menu unless you configure it correctly the next time you log on to it NOT to launch at Start up just like Yahoo Messenger amongst other programs. Cheers Faizul

Thanks for sending and allowing me to share your email to me Andrea. Hello Faizul, I am having difficulties posting the screenshots of the msconfig screens, so I have them in three image files. 1 is the two files that I am unticking, which are files that I normally turn off manually. And, Yes, I have given up on removing the Messenger - it tends to come back with updates. 2 is what happens with the General tab when I untick the two files on the Startup tab. And after restart I get message 3, when I click on OK, then 2 appears. If I don't do anything, this happens at every restart. If on 2 I click on Normal as suggested by 3, then 1 has everything ticked again, everything starts up again (as it is supposed to, I guess), and I get no 3 after startup. I guess it is like a safety mechanism Have a great week, Andrea

Hi Andrea you got yourself in a loop J You did well on the 1st screenshot. The second screenshot is normal don’t change anything there. When you reboot your computer the 3rd screenshot will appear to tell you that something has changed in the startup menu and that you should check it out. All you have to do when you see the third screenshot is to tick the small checkbox that is on the bottom left hand corner of the dialogue box. That should do the trick
