Hi, We have a 4-computer LAN at home and I want to backup files from all the computers to an external hard drive. Unfortunately, I cannot "see" the folds/files on some of the computers that I wish to back up. I have used "Properties" to make them shared; nonetheless I cannot see 'em. Any ideas where to start? Thanks. Fred

Hi Fred,
To make sure that you can see all the computers in your home lan you will have to make sure they are all under the same 'workgroup'.
If they are all under the same 'workgroup' then you should be able to see the default share when you go to My Network Places -> View Workgroup Computers.
If you share out different folders in your My Documents or even in your C Drive you should be able to see it on all your computers.
Here are some checklists that you need to ensure are done when sharing a folder.
1. When you right click a folder and click on Properties and go to the 'Sharing' Tab. Ensure that you can check the check box that says ' Share this folder on the network'.
2. You might want to check the second check box that says ' Allow network users to change my files'
Just by doing these checks you should be able to see all the folders that you shared out. I recommend using the default share that is created. You can access the default share by just double clicking your My Computer icon to see the 'Shared Documents' folder. Drag and drop or cut and paste or even copy and paste any files here, this way you maintain some form of security as to let others see the files that you only want them to see.
If you cant see the folders that you are sharing out still then there is an issue. Answer these few questions and maybe I can troubleshoot it for you.
1. Can you see all your computers in your home lan when you view your workgroup? Meaning they all have to be in the same workgroup ideally.
2. Can you see the default shares on all the computers in your home lan?
Let me know what you find out.
Cheers Faizul

Hi Faizul, Thanks for the info. When I "view workgroup computers" only mine shows up. How do I add the other ones to the work group? Thanks. Fred
