OK, puzzled again.
My dad has an older camera with an older chip, a 128MB CompactFlash. To download the pictures onto his new Acer Laptop I got what I thought is plain and simple Plug-and-Play A1Pro card reader/writer that connects by USB 2.0.
OK, why can't I open the folder, do I need to install anything? The Wizard did not recognize anything.

Take me through the steps of when you plugged it in.
XP will recognize the card reader no problem but sometimes it will ask for a reboot when there's a problem during the plug and play install (this is done automatic).
Make sure you can see all the drives on the USB card reader. If you can't see all the drives of the card reader, it might be the card reader or the laptop itself that's having the issue.
If you can see the card reader then the next thing to check is are you looking into the correct drive? Have you tried all the drive that is recognized to see if you can find the pictures?
Let me know.

I checked into the SD chip of my camera and those are read just fine. It thus seems to be the older card only where there are problems with the reading or even recognizing it. However, there is still a diference in my laptop recognizing the card only if the reader with the card in it is plugged in when I start the computer. If I put in the card after the computer is started, it won't recognize and read it. My dad's laptop on the other hand never recognizes that card at all, no matter when he plugs in the reader, or puts in the card. But can read SD cards just fine, too.
Still trying...

is your operating system up to patch level? have you downloaded and installed all your optional patches from the windows update website?
